Over the summer, our chapter members partook in our annual networking trip. The networking trip is a great opportunity for our members to visit, connect with, and learn more about human factors and ergonomics related organizations that are outside of the lab and classroom. This year, TTU HFES visited the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia area.

We would like to thank the following organizations for hosting TTU HFES.

Medstar Institute for Innovation

Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab

Army Research Lab at the Aberdeen Proving Ground

US Consumer Product Safety Commission

Chapter members Emily Maw and Nicholas Garcia took a break from final exams to volunteer for Lubbock Habitat for Humanity. Through their home ownership program, Lubbock Habitat for Humanity offers simple, decent, and affordable homes to families and individuals. Their goal is to empower families and individuals to build a new life through the stability and security that a new home offers. Both Nick and Emily are second year doctoral students in the Texas Tech Human Factors Psychology program. They hope to keep volunteering for Habitat for Humanity in the near future.

For more information on Lubbock Habitat for Humanity, make sure to check out their website.

Our chapter members recently volunteered at the Haven ACS Lubbock. Founded by Dr. Brenda and Joe Wilbanks, the Haven is a non-profit sanctuary that shelters a variety of animals, including adoptable dogs and cats who are in need of good and loving homes. For over 40 years, the Haven has continued to speak for animals that cannot speak for themselves!

HFES TTU wants to give a special thanks to Dr. Wilbanks, the Haven staff and all of the volunteers for letting us help out at the Shelter.

Be sure to check out the Haven's website for more information on this great organization.

The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society student chapter at Texas Tech University is scheduled to receive the gold level award for 2017. This designation is presented by the national Human Factors and Ergonomics Society to recognize student chapters for their outstanding contributions to the discipline of human factors and ergonomics. Gold is the highest level of recognition for this award. Activities and events such as our chapter trip to Palo Alto, participation in HFES conferences and symposiums, guest speaking events, and chapter socials helped us achieve gold status recognition this year.

This will be the 10th consecutive year that the Texas Tech chapter has received gold status. The TTU chapter will be the first student chapter to be awarded gold status 10 times in addition to being the first to receive gold status for 10 consecutive years.

Congratulations to the 2016-2017 chapter members who helped Texas Tech achieve gold status this year, and thank you to the alumni who helped make this a decade-long tradition.

Texas Tech and all HFES student chapters will receive their awards at the 2017 Annual Meeting of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, held this October in Austin, Texas.
